University sports clubs smash Movember targets

Students from the University of Sheffield have showcased their progress during Movember.

They campaigned over the month of November to support the annual charity campaign Movember. Money raised goes toward men’s health projects which aim to help men in key areas, including mental health and cancer.

Growing out mustaches is a key part of Movember – teams posted on their socials both milestones obtained and the progress of their members’ mustaches.

The University of Sheffield has raised over £70k, beating last year’s total of £49,978.

Some of the top teams that raised the most are the University’s Cricket Club, Men’s Rugby Union, Men’s Football, and the Futsal team. The Cricket Club alone raised over £19k.

Harry Tuvey, one of this year’s Movember ambassadors said: “It’s an absolute delight to have smashed our £50,000 and £65,000 target and now push onto over £67,000.

“We are incredibly proud and thankful to everyone who has got involved! Every effort, little or large, has played a massive part in the university’s fantastic effort this Movember.”

In addition to fundraising, when campaigning on Movember, individuals can set a goal of how many kilometers they aim to walk or run – University of Sheffield students have run over 16,180km.

The University of Sheffield Cricket Club is responsible for a large fraction of this figure; the team has logged their total distance traveled as over 5265 km, beating their initial goal of 4129km.

Their Movember page reads: “As a club we are looking to complete 4129km across the month as this is the number of men that died as a result of suicide in the UK in 2021.”
