Sheffield Graduate Conquers 13 Lakes In Three Days

University of Sheffield graduate George Taplin has beaten the record for the time it takes to swim all 13 Lake District lakes.
An avid swimmer since his youth, George completed the challenge in three days, in order to raise money for Just A Drop, a charity that work to provide clean water and sanitation in poor countries.
The challenge saw the former Ecology and Conservation Biology student swim a total of 43 miles, in temperatures varying between 12C and 14C. He started in Windermere, England’s largest lake, and finished in Derwent Water.
Matt Graves, Sports Officer at Sheffield Students’ Union, said: “This is obviously fantastic news and a remarkable achievement.
“One thing that sets Sheffield sports people apart is our commitment to giving back to society, so I am thrilled that the national media has picked up on this.”
Sport clubs and athletes at the University of Sheffield have remained committed to supporting charities, even in trying times.
Matt added: “This year, University of Sheffield club sport raised over £57,000 for charity, including more than £20,000 during lockdown. The world stopped, but sport did not.
“I am looking forward to seeing all the phenomenal charity work our clubs will go on to do this year, despite the restrictions of the current climate.”
George now has his sights set on swimming across the Strait of Gibraltar, between Europe and America.
