Sheffield O2 Arena set to reopen in February after 3-year closure

The O2 Arena in Sheffield is set to reopen in February 2027 after undergoing a substantial 4 year remedial scheme.

The venue was temporarily closed in 2023 and has since seen a range of extensive remedial works, including the installation of a new roof, air-conditioning and servicing for both the main room and the O2 Academy2. In a partnership with Adlib, it also received a substantial sound upgrade to one of the L-Acoustics K3 loudspeaker.

John Hughes, the Managing Director of Adlib, calls the arena a “landmark venue” full of “Brilliant musical heritage.”

Originally opened in 1968 as part of the Top Rank suite, the venue has historically played a key part in the city’s musical scene, having hosted a range of gigs including The Clash, The Police, Joy Division, David Bowie and more.

Liam Boylan, the CEO of AMG (Academy Music Group) has stated that “AMG is the backbone of the UK touring circuit” and that “our venue estate has not been complete without this (the O2 arena) landmark building.”

Sheffield City Council has granted permission for the arena to be reopened as soon as February 2027, and Justin Smith, the Divisional Manager at AMG, said that he “can’t wait to get artists back on our stage.”

The venue was acquired by AMG and opened in 2008 following refurbishment and a grand opening, during which South Yorkshire’s greatest artists had a week under the spotlight. Notably, the opening shone light on artists from Sheffield whose hometown directly influenced their work within the music industry. The venue quickly became a staple institution for music lovers of all kinds and has since hosted shows from the likes of The Prodigy, The Killers, Stormzy, and The Black Keys.
