Sheffield Wednesday axe Garry Monk

Sheffield Wednesday have parted ways with manager Garry Monk and his backroom staff.
The 41-year-old took the reins at Hillsborough in September 2019 but could only guide the club to a 16th-place finish in the Championship last season. Since the start of 2020, he has overseen just seven league wins.
The news broke last night, capping off an eventful week for the Owls. A 12-point deduction imposed in July was halved last Wednesday, after Monk’s side had ended Bournemouth’s unbeaten run the night before.
Speaking to the club’s official website, chairman Dejphon Chansiri said: “I feel the time is right to make a change and I wish Garry and his team all the best for the future.
“I would like to say thank you for the time and effort Garry and his staff have committed to Sheffield Wednesday.”
Since stepping into management in 2014, Monk has struggled to find a long-term home. Following his dismissal by Swansea City in December 2015, he failed to reach 60 games with Leeds United, Middlesbrough and Birmingham City. He has now fallen short again with the Owls, lasting 58 matches.
Attention will now turn to the appointment of Monk’s successor, and Forge Sport will be looking at potential heirs to the throne later today.
Fortunately for the Owls, they have time on their side in the hunt for a replacement as the international break will keep the club out of action until 21st November.
