Students queue for booster vaccines at the University of Sheffield’s Octagon building

Students have been waiting to get their booster vaccines at the Octagon centre today in a large queue that went from the entrance of the Octagon, under the Concourse and towards the Arts Tower.

Starting today and lasting until Wednesday 22nd December, the University of Sheffield’s Octagon building will be transformed into a pop-up vaccine centre to assist with the booster effort.

This comes as a response to the increased number of cases among the student population as well as a rapid increase in daily infections across the UK. Daily infections reached 93,045 today alone.

In a press conference on Wednesday 15th December, Boris Johnson urged the public to get their booster jabs, saying that it is “absolutely vital” to “Get Boosted Now”.

He also announced that those over the age of 18 who had their second vaccine at least three months ago are now eligible to receive their booster. Previously the wait had been six months.

As it stands, only 44.5% of the population over 12 years old have received their booster vaccines; however walk-in clinics such as the clinic at the Octagon hope to increase the number of people going for their booster.

The Octagon will be open again tomorrow, Saturday 18th December, from 9:15-2:45pm. Other centres providing walk-in vaccines include Heeley Parish Church and St Peter’s and St Oswalds by Abbeydale Road.
