SU ELECTIONS: Samuel Timson elected as new Welfare and Sustainability officer

Samuel Timson has been elected as the Students’ Union’s newest Welfare and Sustainability officer after winning the election by 24 votes.

After two rounds, Timson took the victory over runner up, Charlie Thomas, with a total of 832 votes whilst Thomas achieved 806.

On stage this evening, Timson said: “I’m very happy, very surprised”

In his manifesto, Timson pledges to create funds for students who are affected by cost of living increases and who take unpaid placements as well as work with local suppliers to create meal kits that are healthy and affordable.

Timson’s campaign was largely focused on improving student welfare through changes at a higher level, with his other policies being to encourage the university and landlords to better insulate accommodation and to help the SU move away from bad practices and unsustainable companies.

Despite the close result, Timson accumulated more first place votes, in the opening round of counting (808) than Thomas achieved after both rounds (804).
