Sheffield is seen by many as the home of football. It is where the world’s first football club, Sheffield FC, was formed in 1857 and still remains to this day.

However, football is not the only sport prominent in Sheffield. Basketball, rugby league and ice hockey are just a few of the other sports that also have a big following in the Steel City.

Sheffield Steelers for ice hockey, Sheffield Sharks for basketball and Sheffield Eagles for rugby league are all well supported across the city.

As the summer comes to a close there are still many significant sporting events in the Steel City in the upcoming weeks covering a range of different sports. Here’s just a few of them:

24 September

A double header for football and rugby league fans in Sheffield, with both Sheffield United and Sheffield Eagles playing. Sheffield United return to Premier League action after the international break as they face Newcastle United at Bramall Lane. The Blades will be hoping to pick up their first victory since promotion to the top flight at the end of last season.  4.30pm start.

Sheffield Eagles are also in action at the Olympic Legacy Park in the Betfred Championship, with the action kicking off at 6.30pm. The Eagles are set to face Yorkshire rivals Bradford Bulls, looking for victory.

Also on this day is Jane Tomlinson’s Run for All Sheffield 10K. The event attracts thousands to the streets of Sheffield every year. This year’s event starts at Arundel Gate at the time of 9.30am. Good luck to everyone taking part!

29 September

The Blue side of the city have their next home match on Friday 29 September. It has been a difficult start to life under new boss Xisco Munez, but Owls fans will be hoping for three points against Sunderland under the Hillsborough lights. Kick-off is at 8pm.

1 October

Next, to the Utilita Arena where the Steelers will play against Cardiff. This will be their second home game of the new season, following on from the league opener at home on 23 September.

7 October

The following Saturday, there is a double bill of sport across the Steel City. First up, at Hillsborough there is a Yorkshire derby as Huddersfield are the visitors in the Championship. The last time these two teams met was back in March 2021 where a Josh Windass goal saved Wednesday the lead but a Callum Paterson own goal meant the shares were spoilt. Both players will be involved for Wednesday again this time and will hope to feature on the scoresheet.

Later on that evening there is also the WBA World Featherweight Title Fight taking place at the Utilita Arena between Leigh Wood and Josh Warrington. Wood has 16 KO’s in his history, while Warrington has 8. Terri Harper and Cecillia Braekhus are also competing for the WBA and WBO women’s light middleweight titles.

8 October

On that same weekend, it will be a momentous day for the Sheffield Sharks. Sunday 8 October is the date of the first fixture in their brand new home, the Canon Medical Arena situated at the Olympic Legacy Park.

The 2,500 seater carbon-neutral arena will be the first permanent home of the Sharks, having played at EIS Sheffield and Ponds Forge in recent years. Newcastle Eagles are the visitors for this game.

This venue will also serve as the base for the University of Sheffield basketball 1st team.
