University shares latest updates on plans to move towards new Schools structure

The University Council (the university’s governing body) has approved long-discussed proposals for a major restructuring of the Institution. It will see the University’s 42 departments merged into 6 larger schools and move into interdisciplinary teaching.

The new schools will come to fruition over the next two years, with all schools being in place for the start of the 2025–26 academic year.

In an email released by Professor Mary Vincent, she said:

“Currently, the University is made up of five faculties, with a number of academic departments within each.”

She continued: “In the new school structure current academic departments will join together into larger schools. These new schools will sit under one of the existing five faculties.”

The changes have occurred due to academic departments varying in size, meaning access to support and resources differ depending on departments and facilities.

The new school structure aims for more synergy across departments, noting it should “provide a more fair and equitable experience for every student”.
