The best pubs, bars and clubs for Sheffield students

It will come as no surprise to many that Sheffield is often ranked as being one of the best cities for nightlife in the UK – yet there are many debates as to which pubs, clubs and bars are best for students, with justification for the ‘top spot’ normally based on price, location, events and popularity. Here are some of the top venues for late-night music and bars that don’t break the bank.

Nottingham House

Affectionately nicknamed ‘Notty House’, this popular Broomhill pub is just a stone’s throw away from Ranmoor and Endcliffe accommodation, as well as being close to The Wave and Crookes. The pub has been crowned by locals as having ‘Sheffield’s best pies and mash’ alongside an abundance of locally brewed beers. Regular karaoke, quiz nights and pool competitions (with prizes) make this establishment a renowned student favourite.

West Street Live

Home of the infamous £5 round, West Street Live has some of the cheapest drinks in Sheffield as well often hosting live rock and pop acts throughout the week. The bar is open  7 days a week until late and often features on many West Street bar crawls hosted by societies and event organisers meaning it always has a lively and loud atmosphere. Its location also means that a night out can officially come to an end with a takeaway from one of the many nearby outlets.

Leadmill

This world-famous venue is one of the city’s favourite nightclubs and forms a major part of the musical identity of Sheffield. Having hosted some of Sheffield’s biggest bands such as Arctic Monkeys and Pulp, its legendary status has stood for over 40 years since its opening and now hosts a mix of comedians and emerging artists. What’s more, its nightclub continues to pay tribute to its rich history through constantly changing themes for each night, and the £5 membership fee for discounted drinks makes it a popular venue for many students across the city.

Corporation

Corporation is another giant when it comes to Steel City nightlife. The venue hosts many rock and metal bands throughout the week, with all events culminating in their Friday night ‘Drop’ and Saturday night ‘Dirty Deeds’ for alternative music. The club has also introduced drinks for sixty pence on Monday nights in response to rising costs and the knock-on effect this has had on nightlife venues.

Bar One / Foundry

How could we forget our very own Student’s Union! Bar One is open early to students for classic pub meals and fried chicken for amazing prices, while also giving regulars access to air hockey, billiard tables and live TV. Often showing popular football matches on screens across the bar, the venue is often popular for friends to grab a pint and support their team. On nights when sports are not the main attraction, karaoke nights often prove to be a more than sufficient alternative.

Its location below Foundry also makes it a popular place for friends to meet from across the city before they party the night away on one of six popular themed nights – whether it’s Saturday’s non-stop pop, going underground on The Tuesday Club or showing off your university pride during ROAR, Foundry has something for everyone.

Hoffenbrau

Finally, but by no means least, the new kid on the block. Hoffenbrau opened its doors to customers at the start of the academic year and has proven itself to be a refreshing alternative to the surrounding areas while remaining popular with students. Being located just off West Street makes it an easy-to-access venue while distancing itself from what can often be an overwhelming environment. The German theming throughout mirrors that of nearby Steinhaus, yet it differs itself through its large selection of imported beer, offering of bottomless brunch and live music throughout the weekend.
