Can the University of Sheffield claim an historic 10th varsity title in a row?

The University of Sheffield look to claim their 10th Varsity title in a row, which will be a first in the competition’s history.

Sheffield’s inter-university sports competition starts on Wednesday 20 March with ice hockey at the Utilita Arena.

The University of Sheffield look to win the ice hockey for a second time in the event’s history after beating Hallam for the first time at last year’s event.

Annie Henderson, Wellbeing and Sports Officer, said: “Get ready for Varsity – It is time to paint the city in Black and Gold.

“Varsity is more than just a sporting competition, it is the culmination of commitment, teamwork, talent and pride that unites the entire University.

“Stepping out wearing your Black and Gold kit is a feeling like no other. I can’t wait to be there celebrating all our amazing athletes in all the different events.”

Last year the University of Sheffield beat Hallam. Previously, in 2022, the University of Sheffield beat Hallam 52 to 26.5.

No team has ever won the event ten times in a row since the event started 26 years ago in 1997.

The last time a team went on a winning run was when Hallam remained unbeaten for nine years consecutively between 2004 to 2012.

This year is set to be even bigger and better than previous, with a line-up featuring over 2000 athletes, over 80 fixtures, spanning across 30 diverse sports.

Events to watch out for are ice hockey, Hallam Sports Park Day, which includes football and rugby, basketball, and boxing.

Annie said: “Another win this year will mark our 10th consecutive ‘Uni of’ victory! So make sure you grab your Black and Gold kit, come down to the events and cheer as loud as you possibly can.”
