The University of Sheffield Light Entertainment Society (USLES) have announced the title of their upcoming summer production. Taking place near the beginning of the new academic year, with rehearsals and technical elements organised during the summer break, this show will be the second of 2024, following May’s Chosen Ones and is another original script from the theatre group.

Taking to social media earlier today, the society said: “USLES is proud to announce our summer show: The Shivers! Auditions will be held next Wednesday and Friday, and as always, everyone who auditions gets a part!”. The show is an original script by the society’s secretary Mason Lugh, who recently took to the stage as Victor Frankenstein in Chosen Ones.

The latest round of auditions maintains USLES’ policy of ensuring that all auditionees are able to play a part in the final show, one of the defining features of the society and one which sets it apart from both the Sheffield University Performing Arts Society (SUPAS) and the Sheffield University Theatre Company (SUTCo). It has allowed the society to expand in recent years, and saw the group nominated for three Activities Awards in the 2023/24 season, including Small Society of the Year.

The Shivers will be the second of three shows being produced by the society in 2024, with the final show taking place towards the end of semester one, which has not yet been announced. Chosen Ones, the original musical by Martha Allison, which played for two performances earlier this year at the Theatre Deli, was well received and popular among both society members and audiences alike, with The Shivers looking to continue that momentum as Fresher’s Week approaches.

The announcement of the latest light entertainment production of our student community is sure to be exciting both for current USLES members and prospective auditionees and students like. With multiple audition days coming up for the production and a guaranteed role for everyone who participates, USLES’ Summer Show is a prime opportunity for new and returning members to get involved with the society, particularly if more traditional theatre auditions are off-putting. As the society prepares for its second venture of 2024, this announcement is welcome news to budding thespians who are already missing the joys of student theatre!

Auditions for USLES’ The Shivers are taking place on July 24th and 26th. The production will be playing in Sheffield later this year
