Many of the Arts & Theatre societies of The University of Sheffield have been recognised in this year’s Activities Awards shortlists. The annual event, organised by the Students’ Union and Societies Committee, aims to recognise exceptional work from societies and their members over the academic year, in making their student group a fantastic community to be a part of.

Leading the nominations in our sector are Dance Society, being shortlisted for five awards, including Creative Society of the Year, In-Person Event of the Year for their dance competition, and Publicity & Engagement of the Year. Society members Anna Clough and both Masie Shearing and Bella Crolla were also nominated for Treasurer of the Year and Long-Term Contribution to a Society, respectively.

Also scoring big are the Sheffield University Theatre Company (SUTCo) with four awards including Long-Term Contribution to a Society for Autumn Ten Dam and Fresher of the Year Joe Edgar, in addition to Flourishing Committee of the Year and Most Innovative SU Committee of the Year for the wider society. With more shows lined up before the end of the year, everyone in the university of community can go and see first-hand the talent that has gotten this society nominated so many times.

With three award shortlists apiece, it was also a fruitful evening for both Swing Dance Society and the University of Sheffield Light Entertainment Society (USLES). Each received three awards including Flourishing Society of the Year for Swing Dance and Small Society of the Year for USLES. With each having socials and special events lined up after the Easter break, these nominations serve as a testament to the dedication their members are putting in.

There were also a range of other Arts & Theatre societies who also have been shortlisted, including DragSoc’s Valentine’s for Palestine showcase, The Steel City Sirens Burlesque for Small Society of the Year, and Eve Steele on behalf of Horror Society for Long-Term Contribution to a Society, for her repeated work on the annual Rocky Horror Picture Show charity event.

With so many students and societies within our sector receiving shortlist nominations, we are anxiously waiting for the Activities Awards to come around to see who our victors will be, and to celebrate the achievements of all of the nominees, and the many society members who have made it possible.
