Preview: Sheffield Wednesday vs Gillingham FC

It’s the third home game in a row for the Owls as they face Gillingham FC at Hillsborough Stadium this Saturday when the two teams meet for the first time since 2003.

Sheffield Wednesday will be hoping to continue the successes of Tuesday when they won 4-0 against Harrogate Town in the EFL Trophy.

The League One side are currently 8th in the table, 9 points behind the current table toppers, Wigan, and will hope for a clean sheet against their opponents, the ‘Gills’, who find themselves in 19th position.

After being unbeaten for ten games, another win could be the confidence boost Darren Moore’s team need to see off their FA Cup replay against fellow League One competitors, Plymouth Argyle.

While the Owls will need to conserve some of their energy for the FA Cup, it is still important for the squad to remain focused on the league games if they want to improve their current standings.

Gillingham also have their first-round replay after drawing with Cheltenham Town.

One of the players we are likely to see in Darren Moore’s squad is George Byers.

Byers was made a permanent signing by Wednesday from Championship side Swansea in August this year but missed 12 matches due to injury.

The midfielder returned on Tuesday and earned a place on the score sheet in the match against Harrogate Town.

Unfortunately, the same cannot be said for Sam Hutchinson, Dominic Iorfa and Josh Windass, who will all miss out due to injury.

Within the last 24 hours, Liam Palmer has extended his contract with the club.

Palmer is a regular on the team sheet, playing 19 of Wednesday’s matches this season. The Owls will be hoping that this added certainty will create more confidence within the squad as they approach their game on Saturday.

Gillingham is still suffering from a long list of injuries with Robbie Mckenzie Rhys, Bennett and Ryan Jackson now added to their number of injured players.

Their manager Steve Evans admitted that his team is short on players and therefore may not be able to fill the bench for their visit to Hillsborough. He went on to compliment Darren Moore, describing him as ‘top manager’ in an interview.

Evan’s injury crisis should make this game easier for Sheffield Wednesday, but if the team wants to improve on their current table position, they’ll need a win.

The game will take place at 3pm on Saturday, 13th November.
