VARSITY 2024: Hallam narrowly lose out in close-fought women’s rugby tie

In a clash of grit and determination, the Women’s Rugby Union 1st teams from the University of Sheffield and Sheffield Hallam University squared off in one of the great matches of this year’s Varsity. In a fiercely contested match, it was the University of Sheffield who emerged victorious, edging out their rivals by a narrow margin of 17-15.

Right from the kickoff, both teams showcased their prowess, with neither side willing to concede an inch. It was easy to see that these teams were a match for one another, putting in strong tackles and barely allowing the backs to see much of the ball for significant parts of play.

The University of Sheffield drew first blood, with a superb try from Hannah Jones, setting the tone for their game. Isabel Payne’s precise conversion further bolstered their lead, adding crucial points to the scoreboard.

However, Sheffield Hallam University refused to back down, mounting a spirited comeback with determination and skill. Led by standout performances from Faye Burnhill and Captain Izzy Stevens, Hallam showcased resilience and tenacity, keeping the match on a knife edge until the very end.

With the clock ticking down and tension mounting, Hallam rallied with a magnificent last-minute try. Despite their valiant effort, the gap proved insurmountable as the final whistle blew, sealing the University of Sheffield’s hard-fought victory.

The match was a showcase of athletic prowess and a testament to the fierce rivalry and camaraderie between the two universities. With two BUCS leagues separating them, Hallam demonstrated significant improvement, narrowing the gap from the previous year’s scoreline.

Niamh McNally’s exemplary leadership served as the cornerstone of the University of Sheffield’s deserving victory, as well as the squad’s clear prowess in teamwork and communication. As captain, McNally epitomised resilience, guiding her team with unwavering determination and strategy.

Players communicated seamlessly on the field, executing their game plan with precision and flair. The entire squad were brilliant to watch throughout, instilling confidence and belief in each other throughout. In particular, Jess Falconer dominated the game at scrum half, spectators were watching a real mastermind of the game, cleverly planning every move she made and keeping everything moving. This cohesive synergy between leadership, teamwork, and communication propelled the University of Sheffield to a well-earned triumph, a testament to their collective strength and resilience as a team.

As the final whistle echoed across the stadium, the University of Sheffield’s squad flooded the pitch, celebrating their hard-earned victory with their hilarious signs (the ones that made it through security that is) so they could all celebrate together. It was a fitting end to a fiercely contested match, highlighting the true spirit of Varsity.
